√ Recipe for Roman Bread

  1. 1 packages dry yeast
  2. 1 cup lukewarm water,plus 1/3 cup
  3. 3 1/2 cup flour
  4. 2 tsp salt
  5. 1 tbsp butter, melted
  6. 1 tbsp sesame seed


2 hours

  1. sprinkle yeast in 1/3cup water  
  2. stir lightly and set aside for several minutes  
  3. sift together half the flour and the salt, then add the yeast mixture  
  4. work together, adding more flour until you have a dough that is workable, but still slightly sticky  
  5. place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat all side  
  6. let it rest for 15 minutes  
  7. knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 15 minutes until smooth and elastic  
  8. add a little more flour if necessary so that the dough is no longer sticky  
  9. return the dough to your greased bowl, cover, set in a warm spot and let it triple in size  
  10. be patient- this will take several hours  
  11. punch the dough down and divide into four balls  
  12. grease a glass baking pan and sprinkle sesame seeds on the surface of the pan before placing each of the dough balls in the pan  
  13. flatten slightly to form a classic round bread shape and mark with a cross if desire  
  14. brush with melted butter and bake at 400^f for 30 minutes  
  15. bread is done when it is a lovely golden color, and a ” tap test” sounds hollow  
  16. serve hot with spiced butter
